Rebel, Rebel

imgres-1I’ve talked a bit already about the new Star Wars movie, as well as how you can continue the adventure by reading Marvel’s ongoing Star Wars comic series. But what if I told you there was more goodness where that came from?!?

Of course there is. Star Wars is the gift that keeps on giving.

Leading up to the release of the new movie, I was doing everything I could to get caught up on all the TV shows and comics that might contain any shred of information I could need to see The Force Awakens. I’m not sure how much relevant info there was, but I sure had a lot of fun on this quest. One of the last things I got to was Kanan: The Last Padawan, which is one of the newer ongoing Star Wars comics. As soon as I started reading I wished I had gotten to it sooner.

The character of Kanan is one who will be familiar to anyone watching the Star Wars Rebels TV series (and if you’re not and you’re a Star Wars fan, you should really check it out), which takes place between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope in the Star Wars chronology. For those who aren’t in the know: Kanan is the captain of a band of space pirates who fly around the galaxy robbing the rich (the Empire) to feed the poor, in a manner of speaking. Even more interesting, Kanan used to be a Jedi! Or at least, he was on the path to becoming one. As those who have seen Revenge of the Sith know, the movie doesn’t end very well for the Jedi, and Kanan finds himself adrift in the galaxy with no home and no friends.

The Last Padawan proceeds to tell the story of Kanan as he tries to survive on his own, developing into the lovable space pirate you can watch on TV. The first volume sees him flashing back to his last days with the Jedi, his unlikely friendships with the people who might just sell him out, and his quest to get his very own ship. It’s a lot of fun, especially since the era between Episodes 3 and 4 is one that hasn’t been explored much up to this point. As a fan I really enjoyed getting to see what the Star Wars galaxy looked like in this transitional phase.

Plus, Kanan’s real name is Caleb, so that’s cool.

I know I’ll be eagerly reading to find out what happens next!
